Literary Farrell Society

This week the Literary Farrell Society enjoyed an end of term trip to our local cinema, to watch the newly released "Virginia Woolf's Night & Day."

The film focused upon one woman's struggles in early twentieth century London to be recognised by her peers in the field of physics and astronomy, overcoming the patriarchal Edwardian society's gender expectations to gain a place at Cambridge University.

The film was enjoyed by all and raised many discussion points from Virgina Woolf's modernist and feminist classic, as we strolled back to school along the promenade

Our Year 7 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable weekend at Lockerbie Manor in Scotland, celebrating the end of a fantastic first year at Rossall.

The weekend was packed with exciting activities that challenged pupils to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence and create lasting memories. From paddle boarding, climbing and abseiling to rifle shooting, axe throwing and many more adventurous activities, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The evenings were just as memorable, with a brilliant Year 7 disco followed by singing around the campfire – the perfect way to relax, reflect and celebrate together.

The residential was a wonderful opportunity to recognise everything our Year 7 pupils have achieved this year. They have embraced every opportunity, grown in confidence and become valued members of the Rossall community.

A huge thank you goes to all the staff who gave up their time and energy to make the weekend such a success. Their enthusiasm, care and commitment ensured it was a truly memorable way to end an outstanding first year.

YEAR 7 TRIP TO Lockerbie Manor

Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSOM) Team Maths Competition.

This week, we took two teams to represent the school at the Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSOM) Team Maths Competition.

Our Key Stage 3 team consisted of Kaison, Kathy, Keanu, and Jocelyn all from Year 7 while our Year 9 and 10 team was made up of Amber, Reuben, Dharmika, and Oun.

Both teams represented the school fantastically throughout the event. Faced with entirely unfamiliar and complex mathematical challenges, the students demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills and a great deal of resilience. They worked brilliantly together in the face of unknown problems, and they should all be incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements.

hEADMASTER AWARDS

Headmaster's Award - Emma (Y12 Dolphin)

Our final Headmaster's Award of the academic year goes to Emma (Y12 Dolphin) in recognition of her outstanding organisation of House Netball. Emma's hard work and dedication created a fantastic evening that brought together students from across the year groups to compete, connect and support one another. Thank you, Emma, for making the event such a success.

Headmaster's Family Phone Call Home - Zach (Y12 Mitre and Fleur-de-Lys)

Congratulations to Zach (Y12 Mitre and Fleur-de-Lys), whose exceptional efforts in organising the Year 12 and Junior Academic Symposium earned him a Headmaster's Family Phone Call Home. Zach has had a tremendous year, and we are incredibly proud of all he has achieved. Well done, Zach!

A level and GCSE students celebrated their end of year shows in the Art & Design Department. There were a range of wonderful GCSE final outcomes, together with A level exhibitions, showcasing their A level projects in Art & Design and in Graphic Communication. The work was of an exceptional standard, with some truly outstanding  pieces.

The evening of Art was accompanied by school musicians, who played exceptionally  throughout the evening, creating a truly amazing atmosphere. This exhibition evening was very well attended by the students, their friends and families, together with a number of local art judges.

KS3 & KS4 Essay Competition 2025 — The Results Are In!

This year's Essay Competition has been one of our finest yet, with an outstanding field of entries spanning a remarkable range of topics - from the threat of nanoplastics to society, to the role of women in the ancient world, to the mysteries of the Dark Ages. A huge thank you to all the teachers who provided such varied and inspiring prompts, and to every pupil who put pen to paper!

Our essayists tackled subjects as diverse as great leaders and change, the science of nanoplastics, and the benefits of multilingualism. The commended and highly commended pupils across all year groups did a fantastic job - the standard of entries made the judges' task genuinely difficult.

Year 7 - This year the judges simply could not separate our two Year 7 winners, and so we are delighted to award a shared first place. Alicia impressed with a beautifully researched and argued piece asking whether a religion without a God can truly be called a religion, drawing on a wide range of sources and scholars. Jocelyn-Rae produced a scholarly and compelling exploration of the power wielded by women in the ancient world. Congratulations to you both!

Year 8 - Year 8 essays ranged across everything from the effects of diet and environment on how we live, to deep dives into the Raelian movement and Scientology - proof that our pupils are never afraid of a challenging topic! Our winner, Sebastian, produced a technical and expertly crafted essay examining whether the Black Death was a true turning point in medieval society, offering some thoughtful reflections on our own times along the way. A remarkable piece of writing.

Year 9 - Year 9 gave us essays on the psychology of groups, the science of memory, the way feelings shape behaviour, and a thought-provoking challenge to western-centric approaches to history. Taking the top prize was Amber, whose essay asked whether individuals or wider events matter more in shaping history - praised by the judges for its critical thinking, careful research, and the confidence and balance of its conclusion.

Year 10 - The quality of Year 10 entries was excellent across the board. Our winner, Michael, produced an outstanding essay on the challenges of researching the Dark Ages - a period that, by its very nature, resists easy answers - and impressed the judges with the sophistication and rigour of his approach.

Congratulations to all our winners, to the commended and highly commended entrants, and to every pupil who entered. The standard this year has been a real credit to our pupils, and we can't wait to see what next year's competition brings!

Rossall School CCF Army Section Enjoys Outstanding Summer Camp Success

The Rossall School CCF Army Section has returned from an action-packed Summer Camp after enjoying an outstanding week of training, competition and adventure. Despite the exceptionally hot weather throughout the camp, cadets embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, resilience and determination.

The camp brought together around 300 cadets from schools across the region, with contingents travelling from as far afield as the North East of England. It provided an excellent opportunity for cadets to develop their military skills, teamwork and leadership while making new friendships.

Throughout the week, cadets took part in a wide range of exciting activities, including live shooting, fieldcraft exercises, water-based adventure training and a demanding multi-zone military skills competition. The competition tested every aspect of cadet training, incorporating STEM challenges, sporting events, marksmanship and individual shooting disciplines.

Rossall's cadets performed exceptionally well across the competition, securing first place in both the Sports and Marksmanship events. Their success in marksmanship is particularly fitting, reflecting the Army Section's long-standing tradition and reputation for excellence in shooting. The team also narrowly missed out on top spot in the STEM challenge, finishing an impressive second.

A special congratulations goes to Jacob Magowan, who was named the top individual marksman from all 300 cadets attending the camp. This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Jacob's dedication, skill and hard work.

The camp was a tremendous success for the Rossall School CCF Army Section, with every cadet demonstrating commitment, perseverance and excellent teamwork throughout the week. It was an unforgettable experience, full of learning, challenge and achievement, and one that everyone can look back on with great pride.

Well done to all the cadets and staff who represented Rossall School with distinction.

WAYS TO BE WELL AT ROSSALL

As another successful school year comes to a close, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on everything our students have achieved. Whether through academic progress, sporting success, creative pursuits or simply overcoming personal challenges, we have been continually inspired by the resilience, determination and kindness shown by our young people. Every achievement, big or small, is worth celebrating, and we are incredibly proud of all they have accomplished.

As families look ahead to the summer holidays, we encourage everyone to take time to rest, recharge and enjoy time together whilst continuing to prioritise safety. Whether spending time online, enjoying days by the sea or pool, or making the most of the warmer weather, a few simple precautions can make all the difference. We encourage students to think carefully about their online activity, be mindful of water safety, and remember the importance of staying hydrated, protecting themselves from the sun and looking out for friends and family.

We know that summer is a wonderful opportunity to get outdoors, enjoy new experiences and take a break from the usual school routine. However, we also know that the British weather doesn't always cooperate! For those inevitable rainy days, we have included the EdTech Holiday Summer Guide below, which is packed with engaging ideas, educational activities and safe ways to use technology to keep young people entertained while continuing to learn and explore.

We wish all of our students and families a happy, healthy and safe summer break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year and celebrating much more of what makes our Rossall community so special.
