Scholarships at Rossall recognise outstanding talent, achievement and potential, offering pupils the opportunity to thrive while contributing fully to the rich and diverse life of the School.

Scholarships are awarded to pupils entering Years 7 and 12 who demonstrate outstanding talent in their chosen area, and are reviewed annually based on achievement, effort, attitude and behaviour.

Expectations of our Scholars

- Demonstrate consistently high academic standards and a commitment to intellectual curiosity.
- Show independent thinking, critical analysis, and intellectual risk-taking in lessons and academic work.
- Complete all work to an exceptional standard, meeting deadlines and responding constructively to feedback.
- Take responsibility for their own learning and strive to continually improve their academic performance.
- Display a genuine love of learning and intellectual engagement beyond the classroom.
- Read widely and develop depth of knowledge in areas of personal academic interest.
- Contribute to the intellectual life of the school through clubs, societies, mentoring or presentations.
- Engage with academic enrichment opportunities such as lectures, societies, debates, research projects, and competitions.
- Show initiative in pursuing opportunities for scholarship development (e.g. competitions, essay prizes, Olympiads).
- Act as academic role models for their peers in lessons and around the school.
- Support and encourage others through positive collaboration, discussion, and academic leadership.
- Uphold the highest standards of behaviour, integrity and academic honesty.
- All music scholars must commit to taking regular lessons on each instrument they play.
- Music scholars will prepare solo repertoire to play in school concerts and take a full part in the musical life of the school, also supporting and encouraging other students.
- Music scholars should participate in all musical ensemble rehearsals applicable to their instrument. (Eg. one or more of: brass ensemble, swing band, string ensemble, guitar group, chamber music groups, school production)
Dance Scholars are expected to demonstrate a high level of commitment to Dance at Rossall and make the most of the training and performance opportunities available to them. As part of this commitment, Dance Scholars are expected to study GCSE Dance when the subject becomes available to them, while scholars entering Rossall in Year 12 are expected to study A Level Dance.
Dance Scholars are expected to:
- Attend Dance classes, rehearsals and training consistently and punctually.
- Participate in Dance productions, showcases and performance opportunities when selected.
- Attend appropriate co-curricular Dance classes, workshops and masterclasses.
- Represent Rossall at Dance festivals, competitions and external performance opportunities when selected.
- Maintain and continue to develop their technical, physical and performance skills.
- Demonstrate commitment and a positive, professional approach in Dance classes and rehearsals.
- Respond positively to feedback and demonstrate continued progress throughout their scholarship.
- Show a strong commitment to School Dance activities and ensure any unavoidable clashes with external dance training or performances are communicated in advance.
- Demonstrates a genuine passion for performance through involvement in drama, musical theatre, youth theatre, school productions or other performing arts opportunities. Formal qualifications and examinations are welcomed but are not a requirement.
- Shows strong potential as a performer, including confidence, creativity, imagination, communication skills and a willingness to embrace challenges and develop their craft.
- Displays commitment to rehearsals, performances and wider departmental opportunities, alongside a positive attitude towards learning and personal development.
- Exhibits critical thinking, collaboration, resilience and responsiveness to feedback, demonstrating the ability to engage thoughtfully with the creative process, discuss artistic choices and show an interest in theatre and performance beyond their own experiences.
- Art scholars will be expected to set an example to their peers, in terms of producing artwork to the highest standards. It should reflect their talent and ability within the subject and in doing so, provide inspiration to others.
- Art scholars will be expected to demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm by producing artwork in addition to that completed in their Art lessons. They should attend art activities and clubs, attend organised trips, and enter internal and external competitions, to represent the Art Department and the school.
- To plan to study Art at examination level.
- Art scholars should demonstrate extra commitment by showing a true passion for the subject. They should be inquisitive for learning and improving skills within all aspects of Art & Design.
- Participation in every scheduled training session for the student’s chosen sport(s).
- Attendance at every fixture for which the student is selected.
- Attendance at all designated strength and conditioning sessions.
- Sports scholars are expected to support teammates and remain engaged with the team environment.
- Maintain a consistently positive attitude, demonstrating commitment, effort, a winning mentality and a willingness to improve in every training session and competition/fixture.
- Act as a role model for other students by demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, behaviour, and respect for teammates, opponents, officials, and staff.

Scholarship Assessments

For Year 7 applicants, to help you prepare for the interview, you are welcome to bring an item that you would like to talk about or discuss during the interview. This could be something that is important to you, reflects your interests, or tells us something about you.

For Year 7 candidates applying for an Academic Scholarship, this will involve an academic assessment. For Year 12 candidates applying for an Academic Scholarship, this will involve an Oxbridge style interview and you will have already selected the subject on your application form.

Assessment requirements for scholarships

Candidates applying for a Creative Arts Scholarship are required to attend an assessment day involving a practical assessment and interview with the Head of Art. Candidates will be asked to:
- Complete a practical assessment to review the standard of their digitally submitted work and assess their artistic ability in person.
Candidates applying for Drama Scholarships are required to attend an audition. Candidates will be asked to:
Prepare two monologues of their choosing, to be learnt by heart. (Maximum 1 minute thirty seconds each).
Candidates applying for a Dance Scholarship are required to attend an assessment day. Candidates will take part in a practical audition led by the Head of Dance. They will:
- Participate in a taught technique and performance class.
- Learn and perform a short piece of choreography.
- Perform a prepared solo in a dance style of their choice.
- Take part in an informal discussion about their dance experience and aspirations.
Candidates will be assessed on technical ability, performance and expressive skills, musicality, movement memory, physical potential, responsiveness to feedback, commitment and attitude. The audition considers both current ability and future potential.
Candidates applying for Music Scholarships are required to attend an audition and interview with the Director of Music. Candidates will be asked to:
- Play or sing two contrasting pieces on their main instrument or one piece on each instrument if more than one is offered
- Aural tests of Grade 6 standard - identical to the ABRSM format
- Viva Voce about the candidate’s musical experience and interest
- Candidates should have reached Grade 6 level in their main Instrument.
Candidates applying for Musical Theatre Scholarships are required to attend an audition. Candidates will be asked to:
- Prepare a solo song from Musical Theatre of their own choosing. This is to be learnt by heart and performed in character.
- As well as a monologue of their choosing, to be learnt by heart and performed in character. (Maximum 1 minute thirty seconds each).
- Attend a short interview with the Head of Drama.
Candidates applying for Piano Scholarships are required to attend an audition and interview with the Director of the International Piano Academy. Candidates will be asked to:
• Play two contrasting pieces on the piano
• Take an assessment of Grade 6 standard - identical to the ABRSM format
• Viva Voce about the candidate’s musical experience and interest
• Candidates should be able to provide evidence that they have reached Grade 6 level on the piano.
Netball, Cricket, Hockey

Candidates applying for Sport Scholarships are required to attend an assessment day. Candidates will be asked to:
- Attend an assessment day, where they can select the sport in which they wish to demonstrate their ability: Netball, Cricket or Hockey.
- The assessment will include sport-specific activities alongside physical testing to assess sporting ability and potential.
- Pupils should bring all equipment appropriate to their chosen sport.
Candidates applying for a Golf Scholarship are required to attend an assessment day. Candidates will be assessed on their current level of golfing ability and future potential. Candidates should bring their golf kit to the assessment.
