ROSSALL sport development
“This is about more than buildings and pitches; it is about legacy. It is about those who came before us, those who walk our corridors today, and those who will follow. With the support of our alumni and wider community, we have the chance to create something enduring and exceptional, a sporting environment that not only reflects who we are, but defines who we will become. In doing so, we can ensure that Rossall stands apart, recognised nationally as a place where talent is nurtured, character is forged, and a true winning mentality is embedded in everything we do.”
— MR ANDREW MCBRIDE, HEADMASTER OF ROSSALL SCHOOL
Sport Development at Rossall school
The youth sporting landscape within independent schools has changed significantly over the past 15 years, and Rossall has responded proactively by placing football at the heart of its core field sport provision. This strategic direction, strengthened by the partnership with Manchester City, has established Rossall as a recognised national presence within the independent school football landscape. To fully realise the ambition of delivering a Manchester City inspired environment, continued investment in facilities is essential to bring provision in line with academy standards.
To support this vision, the development of outstanding, purpose-built infrastructure is a natural next step. This includes a dedicated 3G football surface, complemented by an upgraded Category 1 standard grass pitch, both equipped with floodlighting to enable high-quality training and competitive fixtures throughout the year.
These enhancements will significantly increase access to football facilities for all pupils, broadening opportunities for participation, structured training, and competitive match play. They will also reduce the current reliance on off-site venues, allowing more time to be spent developing players on campus in a more consistent and efficient environment. The result is a stronger, more cohesive football programme that directly benefits student experience and progression.
Beyond the immediate sporting impact, such facilities represent a long-term investment in the wider school community. Modern sports infrastructure not only enriches student life but also strengthens the overall sustainability of provision, creating opportunities for wider use, engagement, and external partnerships. Across the independent sector, schools are increasingly adopting more balanced financial models, where high-quality facilities play an important role in supporting both educational excellence and long-term operational resilience.

3G Pitch Development and First Team Pitch Enhancement
Participation • Wellbeing • Excellence
The addition of a 3G Astroturf pitch has been identified as a key step in enhancing the sporting experience at Rossall. Extensive feasibility work has already been completed, and a planning application has been submitted as part of this important development.
The proposed 106m by 70m pitch will meet the highest FIFA quality standards, strengthening football across all areas of school life. It will support curriculum lessons, inter-school fixtures and the Football Signature Programme, while also providing a high-quality environment for performance and development.
Crucially, this facility will benefit the entire school community. Throughout the school day, students from Year 7 to A Level will be able to engage more fully in sport, with the flexibility to focus on their chosen activities each term. This ensures consistent use of the space and broad access for all pupils, regardless of ability or pathway.
The introduction of an all-weather surface will allow football and other sports to take place year-round, improving participation, continuity and overall experience. It will enhance daily school life, support student wellbeing and play an important role in both retaining current pupils and welcoming new ones to Rossall.
This project represents a major step forward for sport at the school and is a clear priority for development. Following the securing of financial support, construction will be delivered by Surfacing Standards Limited, with an estimated build time of 25 to 28 weeks. The aim is to open the facility shortly after the Summer Term, ensuring it can make an immediate impact for students.
