Launching the Rossall sport Development Plan: Investing in the Future of Sport, Community, and Legacy
We are pleased to launch our Rossall Development plan. Our first priority project within the development plan is the creation of a new all weather 3G football pitch. This will be a transformational investment that will redefine opportunities for current and future Rossallians. This facility will allow students to train and compete year-round, strengthen participation and performance pathways and ensure Rossall continues to lead with ambition in school sport.
At Rossall, sport has never simply been an activity; it has been a defining thread in the life of the School, woven through generations of students who have worn our colours with pride and carried our values far beyond the playing fields. It is found in early morning training sessions, in the discipline required to prepare when others rest, and in the grit that is built through repetition, challenge, and shared endeavour. These are the moments that shape not only stronger athletes, but stronger individuals, instilling a quiet confidence and a winning mentality that endures long after students leave. What binds this together is something deeper. We are all Rossallians, past and present, connected by a shared identity and a collective pride that transcends time. That sense of belonging matters. It is what turns effort into commitment, participation into purpose, and teams into communities.
Alongside the new 3G pitch, we are equally committed to enhancing our provision in Golf, by further developing a triple simulator room and outdoor coaching pod, providing year round opportunities for players of all abilities to develop and compete at the highest level. We also aim to further strengthen our Cricket provision, expand our E-sports programme, and develop a new cardio gym and Sports café, creating inclusive spaces that encourage participation, performance, health, and community connection across the School.
Beyond Sport, the Development Plan also reflects our commitment to heritage, reflection, and values. A proposed Garden of Reflection within Hall Gardens will honour the legacy of the Kindertransport and provide a meaningful space for remembrance and education.
You can learn more about the Sport Development Plan here.
With the support of our alumni and wider community, we have the chance to create something enduring and exceptional, a sporting environment that not only reflects who we are, but defines who we will become.
We now ask all Rossallians to help champion this vision. Whether through advocacy, introductions, expertise, fundraising support, or a donation, every contribution will help shape the future of Rossall Sport for generations to come. Please support the campaign and become an ambassador for the Rossall Development Plan here: Donation Form

Rossall Leavers’ Day 2026
Year 13 student Yesenia, who has been a part of Rossall since Preparatory School, delivered a beautifully written and powerful speech for Leavers’ Day last Friday. Below is the speech she presented.
“When Mr Crombie asked me if I could deliver this speech today, I honestly considered saying no and letting the opportunity pass on to someone else.
If I was told at the beginning of year 12 that I would be standing here giving a speech in front of our whole year group, I would never have believed it. Public speaking has always been one of my biggest fears and anyone who knows me even a little bit can confidently say that is true. Since joining Rossall when I was in year 2, I can tell you that at every single parent’s evening, at least one of my teachers would tell me that I should “contribute more to class discussions”.
For so many years, the fear of saying something wrong or embarrassing myself held me back. However, especially within the last 12 months, I have come to realise that there is so much more to gain when you stop letting the opinions of others dictate your actions. Now I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t still quite nervous standing in front of you all today and honestly who wouldn’t be? Despite this, with the help of many people in this room right now, I’ve learned to overcome this fear and it has undeniably changed my life for the better.
If you asked my parents, they would tell you that when they asked me when I was in year two if I wanted to come to Rossall like my brother and sister, I said no. I was comfortable at my small primary school, only a two minute walk from my house, with people I knew and teachers I was familiar with. Nevertheless, my parents still enrolled me in Rossall despite my protests and dropped me off for my first day. After about 8 hours, my parents picked me up and I left my classroom with my brand new red book bag and a case with a violin in it. I have been told that I immediately signed up for intermediate violin club on my first day although I had no previous experience with the violin whatsoever so I’m not quite sure what my thought process there was. After this day they asked me if I still wanted to go back to my old school or not. I can tell you, I said no. On that first day I met both James and Thishani, two people who I had no idea would become my lifelong friends. Immediately I was being pushed beyond my comfort zone and being given opportunities that would only help me grow. However, I will never forget being made by Miss Topping, our year two teacher, to eat all my peas at lunchtime. I hate peas and to this day I will not touch one.
Despite the pea incident, that was only the start of my rossall journey and already I was being exposed to so many new opportunities at such a young age and making friendships that would carry me through the end of my school journey and onwards.
One thing I value so much about Rossall is the international community it brings. Growing up, I never felt like I belonged in Fleetwood despite being born here but not from here. Living in such a small town where I rarely saw anyone who looked like me I never managed to feel a sense of community. This changed when I came to Rossall. Finally I saw not only people like me but people from all over the world, all with different stories and different struggles, but the one thing that brought us closer together was that we were all here in the same place at the same time, sharing the same experiences.
As a year group, despite being slightly interrupted by lockdown throughout Year 7 and 8, we still managed to make the most of our time here, through sporting achievements, various trips to Austria, Switzerland, Berlin, being part of many musicals, Chicago, Grease, Footloose, and most famously Bugsy Malone which unfortunately never made it to the stage.
Aside from these achievements, the most important thing we have done is grow as individuals.
Leave Rossall as a better person than you were when you arrived here. I’m sure we’re all sick of hearing Mr Crombie say this to us. However, I'm also sure that this is the best piece of advice we could have been given for our time at school. Once we leave this place, we won’t be remembered by what set we were in or what grades we got but by how we made people feel and the legacy we left.
By this I am not saying that your grades don’t matter because of course they do, we have all worked so incredibly hard to get to where we are today. What I'm saying is that the lasting memory of you is defined by your behaviour and that your character will long outlast your report card, so remember that when you are given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind, it will get you much further in life.
And even though we’re all excited for what comes next, universities, degree apprenticeships, gap years, jobs, or whatever the future might look like for you I think there’s also a part of everyone that wishes things could just stay the same a little longer although you might not realise it just yet.
And maybe we won’t miss the crazy weeks of mocks with exams almost every day or having to sit through what seem like endless services in chapel when it’s somehow colder inside the building than outside or having to wait until 1:15 for lunch when you’re just really really hungry or submitting coursework at 11:59pm, right before the deadline. But I know that everyone in their own ways will miss being a student here.
Because Rossall has been more than just a school. For many of us, it’s been our second home and It’s where we grew up. It’s where we made friendships, memories, mistakes, and experiences that have shaped us into who we are today.
And the truth is, however cliche it might sound, you can leave Rossall, but Rossall never truly leaves you.
So as we move on to our next chapters, I hope we leave with not just a qualification and a fear of seagulls, but with important memories and experiences. And no matter where life takes us, Rossall will forever be a home you can come back to.
Thank you.”
From the whole Rossall community, we send our very best wishes to Year 13 as you take your next steps on your journey beyond school. Over the years, you have not only grown academically, but have become part of a close and supportive community built on friendship, kindness, and shared experiences. Rossall will miss you greatly, but we are incredibly excited for all that lies ahead for each of you.
Your time here has been filled with lasting memories, strong friendships, and the support of staff and peers who have watched you develop into the individuals you are today. You will always remain part of the Rossall family, and this school will continue to be a place you can return to and call home. We look forward to hearing about your stories, achievements, and successes at future Old Rossallian events, and seeing how you continue to grow beyond Rossall.
Floreat Rossallia!

headmaster’s awards
This week’s Headmaster’s Awards celebrate three students who remind us that excellence comes in many forms: intellectual curiosity, quiet determination, and kindness towards others.
In Year 8, Joshua [Mitre and Fleur-de-Lys House] demonstrated exceptional academic ambition far beyond his years. Exploring complex mathematical concepts independently outside the classroom, he tackled advanced work on similar triangles, algebraic reasoning, and geometric problem-solving with remarkable resilience and originality. His willingness to push beyond the expected is a wonderful example of true scholarly spirit.
Our Rossall Citizenship Awards go to two outstanding Year 12 students from Wren House, Shannon and Marta, whose generosity and compassion made a lasting impact on our Year 11 Spanish pupils during GCSE speaking preparations.
Shannon gave countless hours of support, encouraging anxious students with patience, calmness, and reassurance that helped build both confidence and resilience. Marta, despite not studying Spanish herself, stepped forward selflessly to help wherever she could, offering encouragement, practical support, and unwavering positivity to those who needed it most.
Together, Joshua, Shannon, and Marta embody the very best of our school community: courage to challenge themselves, commitment to others, and the quiet determination to make a difference!

Rossall House Sports Update: Dolphin House Clinches Double Victory in Junior Competitions
Rossall pupils have once again demonstrated outstanding House spirit, teamwork, and determination in the latest House Sports competitions.
A special congratulations goes to Dolphin House, who secured an impressive double win by taking first place in both Junior Hockey and Rounders. Their performances reflected excellent collaboration, commitment, and competitive spirit throughout the events.
In Junior Hockey, Wren House achieved a strong second-place finish, with Rose House close behind in third, completing a highly competitive series of matches.
Across all fixtures, pupils from every House showed exceptional enthusiasm and sportsmanship, contributing to an exciting and supportive atmosphere throughout the competitions. The House system at Rossall continues to play a central role in school life, fostering a strong sense of community, friendship, and encouragement both on and off the field.
Congratulations to all Houses for their participation and achievements, and best of luck to everyone competing in the upcoming Tug of War event.
Celebrating Outstanding Success in the MEM Maths Competitions
Sophia S E, a talented Year 10 student, has achieved outstanding success in the MEM Senior Open Maths Competition, earning both a Certificate of Merit and the title of “Best in School”.
The competition, organised by Mathematical Education on Merseyside (MEM), attracts over 2,000 applicants nationally each year. It is designed to challenge students with complex and creative mathematical problems that encourage deep thinking and advanced problem-solving skills.
Sophia’s achievement reflects her exceptional mathematical ability, dedication, and perseverance. Competing against many highly capable students from across the country, she demonstrated impressive analytical thinking and determination to secure recognition at such a high level. Being named “Best in School” is a testament not only to her talent, but also to the hard work and enthusiasm she consistently brings to mathematics.
This is a fantastic accomplishment and Sophia should be extremely proud of her success.
Huge congratulations to Joshua S E, a brilliant Year 8 student who has achieved fantastic success in this year’s Junior Open Maths Competition. Joshua earned a prestigious Certificate of Merit, a feat that is truly impressive given the scale of the challenge. Organized by Mathematical Education on Merseyside (MEM), this competition is famous for its tough, brain-teasing puzzles that push students to think creatively and solve problems in ways they wouldn't normally do in class.
Joshua’s achievement is even more remarkable when you look at the numbers. Out of more than 1,200 entries from 105 different schools, only 80 certificates were awarded in total. Placing in that tiny group of winners shows that Joshua has a real talent for logic and a "never give up" attitude when faced with a challenge.
We are all incredibly proud of the hard work and enthusiasm Joshua brings to his maths. To stand out among so many capable students from across the region is a massive accomplishment, and he should be buzzing with pride. We can’t wait to see what he tackles next!
Year 9 Pupils Preparing Positively for End-of-Year Examinations
“In preparation for their end-of-year examinations next week, Year 9 pupils at Rossall School have been demonstrating excellent commitment and maturity in their approach to revision. Throughout Tutor Time this week, students have engaged in a wide range of effective revision strategies, including creating detailed mind maps, practising exam-style questions, and using quizzes and retrieval activities to strengthen their knowledge.
It has been particularly pleasing to see pupils taking real ownership of their learning, working both independently and collaboratively to revisit key content and support one another. The atmosphere in the tutor rooms has been purposeful and focused, with a clear determination from students to perform to the very best of their ability.
Staff have been on hand to provide targeted support, guidance, and feedback, helping to build confidence and ensure that all pupils feel well prepared ahead of exams next week.
We wish all Year 9 pupils the very best of luck in their examinations next week and commend them for their hard work, resilience, and positive attitude throughout this important period.”
— Mr Nick Crombie, Director of Rossall Sixth Form

Rossall Piano Academy Students Enjoy Inspirational Evening with Sir Stephen Hough
Students from the Rossall School Piano Academy enjoyed a memorable evening yesterday at the The Bridgewater Hall, where they attended an extraordinary piano recital by Sir Stephen Hough.
The acclaimed pianist performed a varied and captivating programme, which included his own celebrated Mary Poppins Suite. Students were treated to an evening of exceptional musicianship and artistry, providing both inspiration and insight into the world of professional performance.
Following the recital, pupils had the wonderful opportunity to meet Sir Stephen in person, making the occasion even more special. The experience was both educational and inspiring for the young musicians, who greatly valued the chance to engage with one of the world’s leading pianists.
Strong Foundations and First Promotions Mark Successful Start for Rossall CCF and Millfield Partnership
The partnership between Rossall CCF and Millfield High School has enjoyed an outstanding start, with the first half term proving to be a tremendous success and laying strong foundations for the future.
The collaboration has already highlighted the many benefits that cadet training brings to young people, including leadership, teamwork, resilience and confidence. Cadets from both schools have embraced the opportunities on offer with enthusiasm and commitment, helping to create a thriving and supportive environment.
A particular highlight came on Thursday 15 May, when two senior Millfield cadets were promoted to Cadet Lance Corporal in recognition of their exceptional dedication, leadership and service to the contingent.
Congratulations to Lance Corporals Harry P. and Frazer L. on their well-deserved promotions. Their achievement reflects the values and opportunities that the cadet experience provides, and they are excellent role models for the younger cadets following in their footsteps.
Science Made Simple Sparks Curiosity at Rossall
“On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome Science Made Simple to Rossall for their exciting and engaging Xtra Factor Show, sponsored by BAE Systems, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. Pupils from Years 3–10 enjoyed an inspiring journey discovering six amazing women in STEM whose achievements are often overlooked. From engineers and inventors to volcanologists and astronomers, pupils learnt about the groundbreaking work these women carried out and the impact they continue to have today.
The show was full of interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities. Pupils explored how scientists use light to work out what stars are made from, investigated gravity and volcanoes through rocket demonstrations, and learnt about topology through Möbius loops and incredible paper chain challenges. There were plenty of laughs, surprises and opportunities for pupils to get involved throughout the presentation.
It was fantastic to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm from the pupils, and we hope learning about these inspiring women in STEM encourages them to keep asking questions, thinking creatively and dreaming big about what they might achieve in the future.”
— Mrs Clare Cohen, Head of Year 7 and Chemistry Teacher
“It is with a mix of sadness and great pride that we say goodbye to Mr. Shaw from our Mathematics department at the end of this half term. A truly formidable mathematician (and physicist!), Mr. Shaw has been a cornerstone of our A-Level Further Maths provision, always ready to take the lead on the most challenging theorems and inspire our senior students.
Whether he was in the common room or the maths office, he could usually be found tackling a complex puzzle or enjoying a good chat with colleagues over coffee. His talents weren't just limited to the classroom, either; he was frequently seen on the fives and squash courts and the swimming pool, building a solid reputation as a sportsman. As he departs for an exciting new chapter with the RAF, we wish him and his family the very best of luck. We truly hope he finds a new crew of like-minded colleagues who appreciate a tricky brain-teaser, the odd maths joke, and a caffeine-fueled catch-up as much as we have!
Floreat Rossalia!”
— Mrs Rachael Threlfall, Head of Mathematics and Coordinator of Mathematical Outreach and Enrichment

Drama Department Success – National Youth Monologue Competition & Methuen Prize Nomination
“We are delighted to share some outstanding achievements from our Drama Department in this year’s National Youth Monologue Competition, which attracted over 4,000 entries nationally.
Two of our students, Oliver J. and Annabelle C., have successfully progressed to the regional finals, which will take place this Sunday at the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe. This is an exceptional achievement, and we wish them the very best as they compete for a place in the grand final in London’s West End. Oliver J. was previously awarded Overall Winner of the Screen Monologue category within his age bracket, a remarkable achievement in a highly competitive national field.
In addition, several other students were recognised for the strength of their performances, placing them within the top tier of their respective categories and receiving Highly Commended recognition. These students are Blanca S. P, Emily J, Sophie T, Etienne M and Blossom M.
We would also like to give special recognition to Nancy H. and Sophia W., alongside the five students above, all of whom received Highly Commended status. Their performances were of an exceptionally high standard, and we are very proud of the commitment, creativity, and professionalism they demonstrated throughout the process.
Beyond individual success, we are also thrilled to announce that the school has been nominated for the Methuen Drama School and Group Prize, in recognition of our outstanding work in developing young performers and nurturing emerging theatrical talent. This nomination follows last year’s recognition of the school as a Centre of Excellence, further reflecting the strength and consistency of our Drama provision.
We are incredibly proud of all our students involved and look forward to supporting Oliver J. and Annabelle C. at the regional finals this weekend.”
— Mr Michael Holdsworth, Head of Performance Studies
ways to be WELL AT ROSSALl
It was a wonderful surprise to hear from one of our very first Wellbeing Ambassadors this week, an Old Rossaillain who has written below about her continued work on wellbeing after graduating from Rossall last year. In honour of Mental Health Awareness Week, please see Kate’s reflections on her own wellbeing journey.
“Hello, I’m Kate, and I left Rossall last year after an amazing two years in sixth form. Whilst at Rossall, I had the privilege of creating and leading our wellbeing ambassador program alongside Mrs Moore. This allowed me to share my already established passion for wellbeing with other like-minded students, and together they helped Mrs Moore and I to lead numerous wellbeing initiatives in school. From kindness challenges to our ‘pass the book campaign’, all the wellbeing activities I led at Rossall were a result of the kind community around me; Rossall created an environment where I felt safe and supported to express my passion for mental wellbeing.
Whilst at Rossall, I was pleased to come runner-up for the youth mental health charity Beyond’s ‘Above and Beyond’ award, allowing me to join their team of Beyond Champions. Since leaving Rossall, I’ve thrown myself into the sphere of mental health charity work. This year at Beyond, I’ve helped to create our amazing wellbeing resources for schools through our Now and Beyond program. This entailed being part of a film production, producing educational videos to be played in classrooms. Our belief at Beyond is that early intervention saves lives. Through our education program, we believe we are helping teachers and students get the education they need to support everyone's emotional well-being.
More recently, I have also joined FlippGen’s Youth Advisory Board as a Digital Rebel. At FlippGen, our slogan is ‘Know Tech, Not No Tech’, as we believe young people should be educated in how to use tech safely, instead of banning tech in society. Our central focus is on helping to create changes in policy and education systems to improve these systems here in the UK. Recently, at our ‘Youth Town Hall’ event, I had the pleasure of questioning Kanishka Narayan, our MP for AI and Online Safety, as part of a youth panel. Kanishka Narayan answered my question ‘If you were a teenager in today's society, would you feel safe online?’ with honesty, stating that he would not feel safe online under current regulations. These questions provoked conversations surrounding how to make technology safe for our young people, and I'm pleased to say that notes from this interview are being taken to parliament this week, with the hope of seeing some real policy change.
The work I do within wellbeing has increased significantly since leaving Rossall, and I wholeheartedly believe that without the support I received at Rossall, I would not be participating in this work today. Rossall’s supportive community gave me the confidence to see mental health not only as something I associated with personal struggles, but as an area where I could help support society more broadly. For this, I am eternally grateful.
Thank you,
Kate”

with love from chapel
“Our wonderful chapel is full of amazing quirks, but none are quite as remarkable as the various carved creatures all around our pews and all around us. From tiny monkeys giggling above our heads to fierce dogs in chains reading books, we have an astonishing array of fantastic beasts.
One of the oddest and yet also dearest creatures of all is the one you see on this photo: Right in the middle of the nave, amongst ferocious hounds and wild boars sits a donkey. Where the other beasts have chains and leashes, our donkey has a school-boy cap and a book.
Legend goes that this (not very flattering) depiction of the Rossall boys back in the day was the direct result of the carvers’ frustration with those boys’ behaviour.
If that is true (and if their behaviour was indeed bad enough to warrant this reaction) may stay a secret of the chapel walls. For us, the little donkey is a marvellous memory of the life our beautiful chapel has encountered and all the people whose memories it has kept over more than 170 years.
Let’s thank our little carved donkey for that.“
