Rossall School Cadets Achieve National Success at Bisley

Cadets from Rossall School stepped proudly onto the national stage this term as they took part in the inaugural Cadet Air Rifle Competition. Representing Rossall CCF, the team travelled to the prestigious National Shooting Centre Bisley, widely regarded as the home of shooting in Britain and the venue purpose built for the shooting events at the Commonwealth Games 2002 Manchester.

What followed was an outstanding display of skill, determination and teamwork.

Cadet Sergeant Ellison led from the front, delivering an exceptional performance. He claimed two individual trophies as Best Shot in the CCF category across two separate aggregate competitions, before going on to secure the Overall Best CCF Shot Trophy, a remarkable achievement at national level.

The team as a whole performed superbly, returning to Rossall with two silver medals and one bronze medal. It was a tremendous accomplishment and a proud moment for the School.

Beyond the medals, the cadets were commended for their conduct throughout the competition. They were praised not only for their composure and accuracy on the firing point, but also for their sportsmanship. Several Rossall cadets took time to mentor and support competitors from other schools and contingents, embodying the very best of CCF values: leadership, service and integrity.

Captain Lindsay, School Staff Instructor, said:

“We came to Bisley hoping simply to understand how the competition worked so we could prepare properly for next year. Little did we know we would clean up. I am immensely proud of the cadets. Their focus, teamwork and conduct were exceptional.”

Major Pilkington, who has served as an instructor with Rossall CCF for over 12 years, added:

“These results reflect the enormous dedication the cadets have shown. Balancing shooting practice with their regular cadet commitments and academic studies is no small feat. They are an inspiring group of young people.”

Following this success, Rossall CCF is now focusing on reinstating the School’s 25m indoor range. The range, which has been out of service for over five years, requires a new roof and further remedial repairs. Restoring it will allow cadets to train year round and further strengthen Rossall’s fully integrated shooting programme.

The CCF is currently exploring ways to support the redevelopment of the School’s 25m indoor range. Members of the Rossall community who would like to learn more about the project, or who feel they may be able to contribute in any capacity, are warmly invited to get in touch.

With talent, determination and strong community spirit, the future of shooting at Rossall looks exceptionally bright.
