Year 12 IB Biology Students Undertake Internal Assessment Practical Investigations

“This week, Year 12 IB Biology students carried out their Internal Assessment (IA) practical work, an important part of the IB Diploma Programme that allows students to investigate a biological question through hands-on experimentation and independent research.

The IA is designed to help students apply scientific knowledge outside of textbooks by planning, conducting, and evaluating their own experiments. Students were responsible for selecting a focused research question, identifying variables, collecting reliable data, and analysing their results using appropriate scientific methods.

Across the laboratory, a wide range of investigations took place. Some students explored the effects of environmental factors such as temperature and pH on cellular diffusion and enzyme activity, while others investigated topics related to photosynthesis and microbial growth. Each experiment required careful planning, precision, and strict attention to laboratory safety procedures.

The practical sessions gave students the opportunity to strengthen essential scientific skills, including data collection, critical thinking, problem-solving, and evaluation of experimental limitations. These are key components not only of the IB Biology course but also of scientific research in general.

Teachers were impressed by the level of independence and engagement shown throughout the week. Students demonstrated strong commitment to producing meaningful and well-controlled investigations, reflecting the inquiry-based learning approach that is central to the IB programme.

The IA practical work is a significant milestone for IB Biology students, contributing directly to their final assessment while also preparing them for future academic study in science-related fields. It was an exciting and productive week in the laboratory, showcasing both curiosity and scientific dedication.”
