ROSSALL’s CCF Royal Navy Section Host Mess Dinner

In a shining example of naval tradition and esprit de corps, Rossall School’s CCF Royal Navy Section proudly hosted its first Mess Dinner on Thursday 19th June. An evening that celebrated the cadets for their year dedicated to the customs, discipline, and fellowship at the heart of the Senior Service.

The evening presided over by Mess President CPOC Johnny L, whose steady hand and unwavering dedication helped guide proceedings with characteristic poise. The event was overseen by Section Commander Lieutenant Rebecca Heath, whose leadership and dedication continues to shape and inspire the RN Section. The dinner also welcomed honoured guests Lieutenant Cable and Lieutenant Craddock, affiliates from HMS Audacious, as well as valued Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs), further reinforcing the strong links between Rossall’s cadets and the wider Royal Navy family.

Held in the formal tradition of a Royal Navy Mess Dinner, the evening featured all the hallmarks of a proper naval occasion: perfectly ironed uniforms, polished silverware, and a series of ceremonial toasts which paid tribute to service, unity and core values. For many cadets, it was their first time experiencing the pomp and ceremony of such a distinguished event, an opportunity to not only practise military etiquette, but also to understand the rich traditions that underpin the Royal Navy.

Lt Heath expressed her immense pride in the cadets and the evening as a whole: “Watching our cadets rise to the occasion with such confidence, respect, and enthusiasm was genuinely moving. This dinner wasn’t just a celebration of naval tradition, but a testament to their growth, maturity, and their promise to uphold the Royal Navy’s Core Values.

Diners were treated to stirring speeches, a memorable awards presentation and spur-of-the-moment speeches from cadets, offering moments of humour, heartfelt gratitude, and reflections on their journey so far. Awards were presented to the Best New Entry Cadet, Best Turnout, and Best Senior Cadet, recognising those who have gone above and beyond in commitment, conduct, and example.

As the final toast was made to the King and the evening drew to a close, the sense of pride was palpable. With new memories made, the RN Mess Dinner proved not just a celebration, but the beginning of great things to come within the CCF RN Section.

A special thank you goes to the Rossall catering team for the outstanding meal and service, and to the musicians whose performances elevated the evening with elegance and atmosphere. Their contributions were the perfect finishing touch to a truly unforgettable occasion.
