Rossall School Cadets Gain Exclusive Insight into Military Aviation at RAF Woodvale

“Eight RAF CCF cadets from Rossall School, proud to represent the oldest cadet unit in the country, recently visited RAF Woodvale for a highly anticipated flying experience.

Although poor weather meant that flying was not possible on the day, the visit proved far from disappointing. Instead, the cadets were given an in-depth and engaging tour of the station by one of the instructors from the Royal Air Force. His enthusiasm and expertise ensured the group still gained valuable insight into military aviation.

The tour began with an overview of flight planning, where the cadets learned how pilots prepare for a sortie. From studying weather reports and mapping routes to calculating fuel requirements and identifying diversion airfields, they were shown how meticulous preparation underpins every safe flight. The instructor also walked them through the structure of pre-flight briefings, highlighting the importance of communication, decision-making, and contingency planning.

Safety formed a key part of the visit. The cadets were introduced to essential flying equipment, including helmets, parachutes, and other protective gear, with explanations of how each item contributes to pilot safety. They also gained an appreciation of the rigorous checks carried out before an aircraft ever leaves the ground.

The visit culminated in the hangar, where the cadets were shown around a Grob Trainer aircraft. Each had the opportunity to sit inside the cockpit while the instructor explained how the controls work, from the stick and rudder pedals to the throttle and instrument panel. He demonstrated how pilots maintain control, monitor performance, and communicate while airborne, bringing their classroom knowledge vividly to life.

Despite the disappointment of not taking to the skies, the cadets left RAF Woodvale inspired and better informed, having experienced a comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the realities of military flying.”
