PRE-PREP & PREP SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
We would like to share some important updates regarding parking and drop-off arrangements at the school. As part of our ongoing efforts to make arrival and departure times smoother and safer for everyone, the bus drop-off area has now been relocated. This change allows parents to make use of the designated drop-off bay at the front of the school. We kindly remind families that this space is to be used for drop-off only and not for parking, so that all students can arrive safely and efficiently.
In addition, please be mindful of where you park and ensure that your vehicle is always in an allocated parking space. This small step helps us to keep traffic moving, avoid congestion, and maintain a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors alike. To provide additional room and better accommodate our school community, the staff car park has also been relocated. These changes are part of our commitment to ensuring that drop-off and pick-up times are as smooth as possible.
We understand that any adjustments to routines can take time to get used to, and we are grateful for your cooperation and patience as we implement these improvements. The school will continue to monitor these arrangements closely and will look at making further refinements if needed. Thank you for your ongoing support in helping us create a safe and welcoming environment for all.

What Value Added Means in Food and Nutrition - Mrs Clare James
Mrs Clare James, our Head of Food & Nutrition, Assistant Head (Pupils), explains What Value Added Means in Food and Nutrition.
In education, the term value added is often used to describe the academic progress pupils make from their starting points to their final outcomes. It is a measure of growth beyond expectation, and it is one of the ways schools reflect on the effectiveness of teaching and learning. In Food and Nutrition, this measure is particularly striking. Our GCSE results consistently demonstrate value added well above the national average, evidence of the close attention given to each individual and the commitment of pupils to achieve…
Fun for Everyone at the Back to School Social in the Square!
Our first Rossall Rose event of the year, the Back to School Social in the Square, was a wonderful success last Friday. It was fantastic to see children of all ages, parents and teachers enjoying the uplifting atmosphere in the Square, with the sun setting beautifully over the Archway. The whole community came together to share in the fun, and it was a truly heartwarming celebration of friendship and togetherness.
There was something for everyone with the fun activities and parent-led stalls, and a huge thank you to our amazing volunteers who did a brilliant job creating their stalls and generously donating the prizes. The Rossall Bar and Barbecue were non-stop throughout the evening, keeping everyone refreshed and energised, while the father-and-son entertainment from Daniel and Harry Morgan-Hayes had everyone bouncing, singing, and in good spirits from start to finish.
It was an evening that reminded us all how lucky we are to be part of this incredible Rossall community, and we can’t wait for the next events coming soon!
Join us for the Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday, 26th September in the Museum Theatre from 9am. Enjoy a coffee and a cake, live music from some of Rossall’s talented musicians, and a lovely chance to connect with fellow parents for a very special cause.

STUDENT SUCCESS: Sixth Form Students Shortlisted for John Locke Essay Prize
Sixth Form Students Shortlisted for John Locke Essay Prize
We are delighted to share that four Rossall Sixth Form students — Toluwani A and Aidan T (Law), and Prisha V and Thishani S (Philosophy) — have been short-listed in the prestigious John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize 2025, placing them within the top 19% of over 63,000 entries worldwide.
The competition, judged by academics from leading universities such as Oxford and Princeton, challenges students to demonstrate originality, critical thinking, and clarity of expression. This year’s essay titles included: “‘When civilians are the main target, there’s no need to consider the cause. That’s terrorism; it’s evil.’ Is this correct?” (Philosophy); “Should we treat non-human animals well because they have rights, interests, neither, or both?” (Philosophy); and “What injury should one person be permitted to inflict on another in the defence of private property?” (Law).
Congratulations to Toluwani, Prisha, Thishani, and Aidan for this exceptional achievement. The competition will run again in the summer term for current Year 12 students.
Headmaster's Award winners
We would like to congratulate this week's Headmaster's Award winners Tunk & Richard!
The Rossall CITIZEN AWARD went to Tunk (Pelican House) - Tunk kindly gave up his time all day one Saturday to meet with the new Thai students joining in September to share his hints and tips on joining Rossall. He was superb and an excellent ambassador for Rossall. Thank you, Tunk, for making a positive impact on our school community!
The Rossall ACADEMIC AWARD went to Richard (Maltese Cross House) - Last year, Richard won the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Junior Intercollegiate Competition, a highly prestigious event open to students from junior conservatoires and specialist music schools. As a result, he was invited to perform in London over the summer at St. James's Church, Piccadilly. This was a major milestone for Richard, as he performed his very first piano recital. Over 200 people were in attendance, including professors from top music colleges in London, and the recital was also live-streamed on YouTube. This is an incredible achievement in his musical journey. Well done, Richard! We are all incredibly proud of you.

WAYS TO BE WELL AT ROSSALL
This week our Wellbeing Ambassadors hosted their first Tea & Talk event. This is intended to bring together students in an informal setting to chat about the first week back, get to know one another, and enjoy a warm drink. The event was hosted in The Hub which is a really welcoming space used by both wellbeing and the chaplaincy - it was great to see a variety of students together sharing their experiences and advice.
In the spirit of community, I would like to take the opportunity to invite parents from across Rossall to our first Wellbeing Bridge meeting on Monday October 6th. These meetings aim to share ideas and discuss pertinent issues around child and teen wellbeing. Our first meeting will be held in the Pennine Suite at 18:30 and we will be joined by Cat Waktare, our school based Mental Health Nurse - please email j.moore@rossall.org.uk to RSVP.
I would also like to share a link to a parent webinar series hosted by Elevate Education. There are a variety of topics addressed, starting with motivation on September 16th - the sessions are free and you can register for any that are of interest to you.
Finally, some students have had the chance to discuss the proposed energy drinks ban for under 16s during PSHE this week, so the quick guide below might allow these conversations to continue at home.
- Mrs Jennifer Moore, Director of Wellbeing
We are delighted to be working on the next edition of The Rossallian, our school newspaper that has become an integral part of Rossall School. This publication serves as a wonderful showcase of the exciting range of activities, events, and opportunities our pupils enjoy across both the senior and preparatory school. We are excited to continue sharing our community’s experiences and achievements with you.
Once again, The Rossallian will be available in both print and digital formats, reaching alumni, parents, staff, and friends of Rossall, as well as prospective families at open days and visits.
To support this initiative at no cost to the school, we are once again partnered with Timesed Ltd to invite a selection of high-quality local and regional businesses to advertise in our newspaper. We are grateful to those who have already participated and helped to make this publication possible.
As valued members of our school community, we want to ensure you have the first opportunity to take part. If you would like to learn more about advertising options within The Rossallian, please contact Carl Huyton directly at carl.huyton@times-ed.co.uk. Carl will also be reaching out to other local businesses in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued support in making The Rossallian a valuable and engaging publication for the Rossall community.
THE LITERARY FARRELL SOCIETY WELCOMES ROSSALL ALUMNI
The Literary Farrell Society was delighted to welcome back Rossall alumni Eleanor Crone and Alicia Anandappa (Class of 2023) this week. Eleanor and Alicia are currently studying English Literature at Durham and Lancaster Universities respectively.
The Sixth Form members of the Farrell Society enjoyed asking them questions and learning about their experiences as undergraduate students of Literature at leading universities.
Eleanor and Alicia spoke fondly of their time at Rossall and the Farrell Society, and it was wonderful to have them back with us. Once a Rossallian/Farrellian, always a Rossallian/Farrellian…
