Boarding options at rossall school

At Rossall School, we recognise that family life looks different for everyone and boarding should be just as flexible.

Our range of boarding options is designed to support busy households while helping pupils grow in confidence and independence. Whether choosing regular or occasional stays, flexible boarding allows pupils to benefit from school life, evening activities, structured prep time and strong pastoral care, while still enjoying time at home.

Exam periods can be demanding for both pupils and families. Boarding offers a calm and structured environment with additional access to academic staff, helping students to focus and prepare effectively. Our flexible, ad hoc and dedicated exam boarding options for Year 11 and Year 13 pupils provide the space and support they need to approach their exams with confidence.

At Rossall, boarding is designed to fit around family life, providing care, structure and opportunity when it matters most.

For further information or to express your interest, please contact Emma Williams, Deputy Head (Safeguarding & Boarding), at e.williams@rossall.org.uk.

Sleeping Out for a Cause: Our Students Support the Street Life Trust

“On Saturday 21st March, 20 Sixth Form students and four members of staff came together to take part in a truly memorable and meaningful event, Sleeping Out for Street Life. Braving the cold, the group spent the night on the Fives Courts, equipped with nothing more than sleeping bags and cardboard, to raise both funds and awareness for the incredible work of the Street Life Trust, a local charity supporting vulnerable young people in Blackpool.

The evening began with high spirits and a strong sense of purpose, and it was inspiring to see that enthusiasm remain throughout the night. We were delighted to welcome many members of our school community who stopped by to show their support. Students kept themselves occupied with card games and conversation, and impressively, some dedicated Year 13s even brought along past papers to revise.

A campfire brought warmth and a chance to share songs and stories. At midnight, the group set off on a short walk in the hopes of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Although they did not make an appearance, the sense of adventure and camaraderie certainly did. After warming up with cups of hot soup, the group settled down for the night, facing the real challenge: would anyone manage to sleep?

While there were a few restless moments and a couple more trips for soup, the group showed real resilience. At 6 am, Mrs. Moore’s alarm signalled the start of a new day and brought with it an unexpected reward: a breathtaking sunrise that provided the perfect ending to a special night.

We are incredibly proud of our students. Their positivity, determination, and willingness to step outside their comfort zones for such an important cause truly demonstrate the strength of character within our school community. Events like this highlight not only their compassion but also their leadership and commitment to making a difference.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who supported the event so generously. By Friday, nearly £400 had been raised, but by Sunday evening, this had risen to an incredible £1,100. The JustGiving page will remain open for a further two weeks for anyone who still wishes to contribute. The link is here.

Moments like this are a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together for a shared purpose. If this is the next generation of leaders, the future is indeed very bright.”

— Mrs Jennifer Moore, Director of Wellbeing

“The sleepout event was a powerful and eye-opening experience. Spending the night outside on cardboard, even in a safe school environment, gave us a small insight into the reality that many people face every night. One of the most memorable parts was how quickly the discomfort set in, especially with how cold it got. These discomforts made the purpose of the event feel very real.

Even though I partake in these kinds of activities every year independently, a key highlight was the sense of unity throughout the night. Everyone supported each other, whether that was sharing layers, making king-sized beds out of cardboard, talking to stay awake, or just keeping morale up. It turned something physically uncomfortable into something meaningful and, at times, even uplifting.

What made the event important was not just raising money, but raising awareness. It challenged assumptions about homelessness and made it clear that it is not just about not having a home, but about insecurity, isolation, and lack of basic comfort. Even though we knew we could go home the next day, it still had an impact. It made us realise how difficult it must be for those who do not have that choice.

Overall, the sleepout was more than just a fundraiser. It was an experience that encouraged empathy, resilience, and a stronger understanding of an issue that often gets overlooked.”

Rossall Golf Makes History at the National Championships

Having secured a place in the SWIFTS Schools Golf Tour National Final, Rossall School embarked on the long journey to the south coast of England to compete over three rounds of championship golf across two days at the stunning Trevose Golf & Country Club.

Arriving at the season finale tied at the top of the SWIFTS rankings alongside Reeds School, Rossall entered the competition with clear ambition, not only to challenge for the National Final title but also to secure their place as the nation’s number one ranked school.

Across the opening two rounds, played in near perfect scoring conditions, Rossall quickly established themselves among the leading contenders. Reeds School set the early pace with an impressive team total of 214, while Rossall remained firmly in touch in second place on 218. With Loretto School, Bedford School, Gordon's School, and St Leonards School all within striking distance, the leaderboard remained tightly contested.

In round two, the leaderboard began to take shape as St Leonards School and Rossall separated themselves from the field with outstanding under par team performances of 209 and 211 respectively, while the chasing pack fell off the pace slightly.

Day two, however, brought brutal conditions, with 40+ mph gusts and relentless sideways rain transforming the course into an unforgiving test of both mental and physical endurance. As scores across the field began to falter, Rossall’s players demonstrated extraordinary resilience and composure under pressure, holding their nerve to secure victory by two shots.

This triumph was not only a team success but also a showcase of individual excellence. Josh G (Year 13) delivered a standout performance, finishing tied first in the boys’ category, while in the girls’ category, Molly and Lila (Year 12) also finished tied first.

Winning the SWIFTS Golf National Final also secured the prestigious Order of Merit title for Rossall, confirming Rossall Golf Academy’s position firmly at the summit of the sport. To emerge victorious across multiple rounds, in dramatically changing conditions, against the country’s best teams is a testament to the academy’s commitment to excellence and the unwavering determination of its players.

“Sport offers no promises. Talent alone is never enough, and even the best teams on paper can be denied. To simply contend requires relentless hard work, deep commitment, and resilience of mind, body, and spirit. You must learn to accept disappointment, yet never lose faith that one day, everything will come together.

This is one of those days. A moment we will cherish and one that will inspire those who follow to keep striving, keep believing, and keep working.”

— Mr Stuart Hemmings, Director of Golf

A Fairytale Triumph: Prep School Brings Shrek Jr to Life

“At first, we were very excited to find out that we would be performing Shrek! After auditions, we were all really happy with the parts we were given. At our first rehearsal, we felt nervous about starting a new chapter, but we knew it would turn out great. Learning our lines was quite challenging because there were so many of them. It was especially difficult when we had to remember long paragraphs while moving and acting at the same time.

When we finally got on stage, we were amazed to see the set. It made everything feel real and even more exciting. Once we had our costumes and microphones, our confidence really grew. The dragon puppet was absolutely incredible, it looked like it had come to life. Thank you, Mrs Cox!

On opening night, we experienced a mixture of emotions. Some of us felt nervous, some even cried, but we were all excited. As soon as we stepped onto the stage, it felt like we owned it. Working as part of a team was one of the best parts of the whole experience. Everyone had an important role, whether acting, helping backstage, or managing sound and lighting. We supported and encouraged each other, which made us feel proud of what we achieved together.

Overall, being part of Shrek Jr has been an incredible experience. It has helped us grow in confidence, make new friends, and learn how to work as a team. It has been an exciting journey from start to finish, and one we will always remember. Our teachers have been so supportive throughout. They helped us learn our lines, showed us how to use the stage and microphones, and encouraged us to do our very best. We couldn’t have done it without them.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make this production possible: Mr Holdsworth for bringing everything together so brilliantly. Stewart for providing the sound and microphones. Mrs Morton and Miss Langford for all the painting that created our amazing set. Mrs Angus for the costumes, and to Mrs Scott and Mrs Kenmare for helping backstage with quick changes and constant support. Mrs Alexander and Miss Leung for the wonderful music, and to Mr Turner and Mr Condon for supporting us throughout the journey.

Well done everyone and thank you!”

— Ralph (Shrek), Sophia (Donkey) and Willow F (Princess Fiona), Year 6 Students

Creative Exam Work in Year 13

“Year 13 students are currently working hard on their exam projects, exploring a range of exciting ideas and techniques.

Layla A. has chosen to develop a juice drink brand, experimenting with bright colours and bold, eye-catching designs. As part of her creative process, she has been combining mono printing with her artwork, using this technique to add depth and originality to her final concepts.

We are really looking forward to seeing how Layla’s project develops and to celebrating the finished result.”

Alumnus Jack Mawditt Signs Professional Contract with Bolton Wanderers

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of Jack Mawditt, who attended Rossall School from September 2022 to July 2024. After completing his GCSEs, Jack left Rossall to take up a scholarship with Bolton Wanderers.

During his time at Rossall, Jack balanced his academic studies with his passion for football. He had previously played academy football for Blackburn Rovers and was attached to Fleetwood Town, demonstrating exceptional dedication and talent on and off the pitch.

Jack has now taken the next step in his career by signing a professional contract with Bolton Wanderers. We are incredibly proud of all that he has accomplished and look forward to following his continued success.

Rossall School is committed to nurturing the talents of our students, both in the classroom and beyond, and Jack’s achievements are a perfect example of this.

Rossall Alumni Tom Atcheson Receives Senior International Call-Up

Rossall School is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Old Rossallian Tom Atcheson, who has been named in the Northern Ireland senior men’s squad for the FIFA World Cup Play-Off Semi-Final against Italy.

At just 19 years old, Tom’s selection for the senior international team is a remarkable milestone and a testament to his talent, dedication, and hard work. He continues to impress with Blackburn Rovers, and this recognition at the international level is a reflection of the commitment and discipline he developed during his time at Rossall.

We are incredibly proud to count Tom among our alumni and wish him every success in this week’s fixture and throughout the rest of the season. His achievement is an inspiration to current pupils and a shining example of Rossall’s sporting legacy.

Pupils Bring Spring Colour to Rossall School Grounds

“The Eco Society recently joined forces with representatives from Year 7 and Year 8 to enhance the school grounds in preparation for Open Day. Under the guidance and supervision of Mr. Curwen, the Head Gardener, pupils worked together to clear away old plants and replace them with vibrant primroses in planters and borders across the site.

Their hard work has brought a fresh burst of spring colour to the school environment, creating a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere for visitors. The project provided pupils with the opportunity to contribute to the school community while learning valuable gardening skills.

Well done to all the pupils involved for their dedication and teamwork in making Rossall School look its best.”

— Mrs Joanne Fairhurst, Head of Department EAL

Rossallians Launch Project to Commemorate School’s Kindertransport Legacy

The Rossall School Foundation has announced a new fundraising project to commemorate an important chapter in the school’s history.

In 1939, Rossall School offered refuge to Jewish children fleeing persecution in Europe through the Kindertransport rescue mission. Three boys joined the school that year: Gerd Haag, Robert Augenfeld and Karl Schneider. Like many Kindertransport children, they arrived in Britain alone, separated from their families and the lives they had known. In a time of uncertainty and upheaval, Rossall provided them with safety, support and a sense of belonging.

We believe this story, one rooted so clearly in Rossall’s enduring values, deserves a permanent and visible place within the school. Through fundraising from the Rossall community, the aim is to commission renowned sculptor Ian Wolter, the artist behind the Kindertransport memorial at Harwich International Port, to create a bespoke sculpture for the school. This sculpture will represent the three boys and stand as a lasting tribute to their journey, resilience and the welcome they received at Rossall.

The sculpture will be installed in the Hall garden at Rossall, forming the centrepiece of a new Garden of Reflection. Surrounded by seating and designed as a tranquil space, the garden will honour the children who found refuge at the school while offering pupils, staff and visitors a place to pause, reflect and connect with Rossall’s past.

For current students, the Garden of Reflection will be more than a memorial. It will bring history to life, helping pupils understand compassion, courage and global responsibility. It will also support wellbeing, offering a calm space to pause, reflect and connect.

We are hoping to gain sponsorship from alumni, parents, friends of Rossall and other supportive organisations to help make the project a reality. For further details, or to make a donation, please contact development@rossall.org.uk or donate here: Donation Form

A Fresh Take on a Classic: Sixth Form Visit Hamlet at Blackpool Grand Theatre

"We had the chance to go to the Blackpool Grand Theatre to see a Royal Shakespeare Company live performance of Hamlet. It was one of those trips that changes how you perceive a text.

Before we went, Hamlet felt like something we needed to analyse in order to understand it. However, once we saw the performance, it became much clearer and, I think, more interesting. The emotions came across strongly rather than just as words. Seeing Hamlet’s frustration, confusion, and anger made it easier to understand his character.

The most striking aspect was that the RSC decided to set the play in 1912 and stage it on board the Titanic. One of the highlights of the trip was hearing the soliloquies performed on stage, especially “To be or not to be”. It was far more intense than hearing it in class, as you could see the hesitation and emotion in the character’s voice. The staging and lighting also made the darker, psychological elements of the play clear, and the themes of madness and revenge were more prominent.

Another benefit of the trip was that we could see the relationships between characters such as Hamlet, Ophelia, and Claudius more clearly. Watching their interactions in real time made it easier to understand the tension and conflict between them.

The trip was a great experience for us, beyond the academic benefits. For many of us, it was our first time seeing a professional Shakespeare production, and the Grand Theatre provided a fantastic atmosphere.

The trip showed us that Shakespeare is more than just a subject to be studied in school; it is something to be experienced. By watching Hamlet live, it came to life in a way that cannot be replicated in the classroom."

— Sofia F, Year 12 Student

In honour of International Women’s Day, Rossall School is proud to support Refuge through our Purple for Purpose campaign. Throughout March, students have the opportunity to wear purple nail colour on their natural nails to show their support.

On Monday, a pop-up salon was set up in Mondos, where The Nail and Beauty Lounge generously gave their time to paint nails for students and staff. Each participant made a £15 donation to Refuge. Boarding houses have also been taking part, painting each other’s nails and contributing independently to the cause.

Together, the salon event raised over £400, with the Charity Committee adding an additional £140.

We thank everyone who has supported Purple for Purpose so far.

If you would like to donate, you can do so here.

Purple for Progress: Rossall Supports Refuge

As we reach the end of term, it is a natural moment to pause and reflect on all that has been achieved over the past few months. It has been a particularly busy and productive period, and we are delighted to celebrate another success within our school community. A new cohort of Year 12 students has now completed their Youth Mental Health First Aid training. This valuable programme not only encourages personal reflection, but also equips students with the skills to recognise when someone may be struggling, engage in meaningful conversations, and signpost appropriately to further support. We are incredibly proud to see this group continue to grow and strengthen the support network within our school.

This time of year also marks an important period of preparation for our Year 11 and Year 13 students, as public examinations draw ever closer. To support families during this time, ParentKind has produced an excellent and comprehensive guide covering all aspects of the UK examination system—from revision and preparation through to results day. This is particularly helpful for our international families who may be less familiar with the UK system and the guide is linked here. In addition, YoungMinds offers a dedicated section on their website with practical advice and guidance around managing exam stress, which we strongly encourage students and parents to explore.

Finally, this week’s parent guide focuses on sports betting. This topic was highlighted during last week’s PSHE session for Sixth Form students, where a visiting speaker discussed the risks associated with gambling addiction. Sports betting is often one of the first forms young people encounter, given its prevalence in advertising and everyday life, making awareness and open conversation especially important.

We wish all our students and families a restful, safe, and enjoyable Easter holiday.

ways to be WELL AT ROSSALl

“It is nearly Palm Sunday!

A reminder to me about a little family tradition we had when I was little: the person who got out of bed last on the morning of Palm Sunday was named the “Palm Sunday donkey” for the rest of the day. I am not entirely sure how sleepy donkeys actually are, and admittedly, this was a tradition that ceased to exist once my sister and I got older and moved out.

Another tradition, however, remained.

On Easter Sunday morning, we take the opportunity to greet each other with the traditional “Paschal greeting”: “Christ is risen!”, which is then answered with “He is risen indeed.”

To this day, my phone pings repeatedly just after midnight, a few seconds into Easter Sunday, when friends and family proclaim “Christ is risen!” over text, email, and social media. It is almost a competition to see who gets there first, and there are definite advantages to being in a different time zone over the holidays.

So here is my challenge for Easter Sunday 2026. I would love to receive lots and lots of emails or messages on the #rossallchaplaincy Instagram account on Easter morning, posting the good news to the entire world.

“Christ is risen!”

And I promise faithfully to answer you all:

“He is risen indeed! Alleluia!”

With love from the chapel for an amazing Easter holiday!”
