Introducing Rossall School’s New Deputy Head (Academic)

We are delighted to announce the promotion of Mr David Clarke to the role of Deputy Head (Academic) at Rossall School, which became effective from January 2026. A familiar and highly respected figure within our community, David has served as the Director of Professional Development, Teaching and Learning and Head of History and Politics since 2019.

A Vision for Rossall’s Academic Future

David’s educational philosophy is centred on a profound commitment to ensuring that every pupil fulfils their academic and personal potential. This vision is built upon a foundation of academic rigour, which he champions through a deep engagement with research-informed teaching and learning practices. Alongside this pursuit of excellence, David is dedicated to the holistic development of each individual. He is a passionate advocate for nurturing the broader skills, aptitudes, and well-being that empower our students to follow their passions and achieve sustained success in an increasingly dynamic world.

A Journey of Leadership and Experience

Since joining Rossall School in 2019, David has made significant contributions as the Director of Professional Development, Teaching and Learning, and as Head of the History and Politics curriculum areas. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping our educational programmes and supporting our staff.

David brings a wealth of experience from previous senior leadership positions that span academic curriculum development, pastoral care, and staff professional growth, including:

● Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning), Head of Sixth Form, Head of Humanities, and Head of Spartan House at Chetwynde School

● Head of Humanities and Head of House at Batley Grammar School

● Senior Leadership Team member with responsibility for Pupil Behaviour at St Catherine’s Catholic High School

His extensive practical experience is complemented by a strong academic background, holding a BA (Hons), MA, M.Phil, and PGCE from the University of Leicester and Manchester Metropolitan University. His commitment to professional growth is further demonstrated by his membership in the Chartered College of Teaching (MCCT) and his ongoing National Professional Qualification for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD).

Beyond the School Gates

Outside of his professional life, David enjoys spending time with his partner, his daughter Eva, and his two stepchildren. The family loves to travel in their VW campervan, making frequent trips to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and with an ambitious plan to drive to Norway…somehow. David’s personal interests include cooking, reading, and current affairs, and he enjoys supporting his children’s passions for dance, bouldering, and football. He also admits to taking some small pleasure in watching Manchester United. Sometimes.

Looking Ahead

The Rossall community is excited to welcome David into his new role. We are confident that his vision, experience, and dedication will be invaluable as he leads the academic life of the school into the future. Please join us in congratulating David on this wonderful appointment.

Upon his appointment David said, “working at Rossall means being part of a genuinely warm and supportive community, where people care about one another and are encouraged to grow. Staff are trusted to be creative, to share ideas and to keep developing, guided by strong pastoral systems and a clear sense of purpose.

Our diverse student body is united by shared values and an exceptional range of extracurricular opportunities that foster creativity, teamwork and personal growth, enabling them to thrive. I am incredibly proud to be part of such a special family and look forward to the times ahead with much excitement.
