The Army camp has been an interesting activity to plan and organise. The initial plan was for the cadets to deploy to Altcar Training Camp and remain there for three days, however, this was not to be with COVID developments. The alternative was for the Cadet Training Team to provide a one day non-residential training day, all schools were given the option to take part, Rossall jumped at the chance to get a day away doing military skills with a difference.
However, that day would be a Wednesday, so the CCF team decided to lay on activities on Monday and Tuesday so that we wouldn’t disappoint the Army cadets, it also meant that parents could still have a night off on Tuesday evening as the cadets slept over in the old Gym.
Day one concentrated on Archery, Air rifle and sports as an alternative, working on teamwork was necessary as the Archery and Air rifle activities focused on individual skills, there was a bit of competition included as always but essentially it was to build on their understanding of direct weapon systems, apply taught principles and develop those across the aimed environment. The cadets were out shooting some of the adult staff by the end of the day!
Day two saw the Army section visit Fleetwood Boating lake where they built rafts, kayaked, got to grips with SUP boards, played in the water and invaded and sank each other’s vessels in many cases. It was a good craic and everyone enjoyed it. The sun was shining and the salt and chilli chips were popular from the kiosk nearby. The cadets slept in the old gym that evening, the staff ensured they could watch the England V Germany game by setting up a screen and projector, LFT tests and kit issues were a priority to enable the cadets some time to socialise within their bubble and to celebrate the match result.
At 0500hrs they were woken by the sound of the bugle playing Reveille, and a very spritely Officer Commanding switching lights on and getting them up as they were leaving at 0630hrs.
The day at Altcar was focused on the obstacle course, training in built-up areas, stalking skills and a paintball range. The cadets also learnt tactical movement drills and reactions to enemy fire. The Cadet training team put on an excellent day and was supported by Rossall CCF adult volunteers.
An excellent camp for the Army despite the multiple changes and alterations last minute.
A huge thank you to the CCF Adult volunteers and the support staff in the school who, as always, step up and deliver amazing support to make these camps a memorable experience.
