Summer - Week 7

from the headmaster

Dear All,

We have reached that time of the year when school feels a little empty. The busiest period of public examinations is beginning to draw to a close and our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition is well underway. It was lovely to welcome so many families to our Open Day last Saturday although the weather was rather challenging. Our student guides were superb and battled on despite the driving rain. On Tuesday evening, we welcomed our new scholars for a celebratory tea in Big School. It was an absolute joy to be surrounded by so many confident and excited young people; many of whom are just setting out on their Rossall journey.

It is on occasions such as these that the warmth of the Rossall community is so readily apparent. However, the true friendliness of  Rossallians is reflected each and every day in the thousands of little interactions that we have with one another. We are very proud of our new School Captains and their extraordinarily accomplished deputies. I am sure that you will want to join me in congratulating Ava H and Toluwani A who will be our School Captains for 2025/26. They will be ably assisted by Erin D, George M, Adeite O and Marie J.

This is a formidable team which is strengthened by our outstanding Senior Monitor Team comprising: Annabelle C, Nikita M, Aidan T, Ruth S, Finlay S, Louise G, Prisha V, Antonia R, Oscar S, Yesenia A, Mia R and Spencer L.

You are very welcome to join us for a very special service of Confirmation which will take place in the Chapel this Sunday afternoon at 5:00 pm. There will be a reception afterwards in the Hall Garden. Prior to this, the Rossall Rose society will be holding their annual colour run and barbeque. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Brian House, Trinity Hospice. This event begins at 1:30 pm  (registration from 1:00 pm). See link below.

All best wishes,

Jeremy Quartermain

FROM THE PREPARATORY SCHOOL HEADMASTER

Dear All,

This week has been a shining example of everything that makes Rossall Prep so special: adventurous learning, sporting success, and the celebration of pupil achievement across a wide range of disciplines.

with love from chapel

Confirmations are a really important thing. You need to confirm event bookings and concert venues, table reservations and business transactions, hotels and your holiday return flight.

This Sunday afternoon, eight of our current students and one who has left us only a couple of years ago are going to confirm their faith!

They have prepared themselves to share their faith with their friends and relatives, have thought about what they think about those stories and people they have learnt so much about and have decided they can ‘confirm’ what their parents and godparents had promised on their behalf many years ago.

ROSSALL NEWS

Duke of Edinburgh Volunteers’ Week

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding commitment and achievements of our pupils through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. Volunteering is at the heart of the DofE, and this year, Rossall students have contributed an incredible number of hours to serving their communities, demonstrating compassion, resilience, and leadership in action.

So far this year, we have already issued 19 DofE Awards, including an impressive 5 Gold Awards, a tremendous accomplishment that reflects the dedication and perseverance of our young people. With many Bronze and Silver participants currently completing their expedition sections, we expect these numbers to rise even further by September.

We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff whose tireless support and encouragement make these achievements possible. Their guidance has been instrumental in helping our students succeed.

meet our new school captains

A huge congratulations to our new School Captains for 2025/2026, Ava H and Toluwani A.

They will be assisted by Erin D, George M, Adeite O and Marie J.

prize day

Congratulations to all our students who took part in Prize Day! It was fantastic to see everyone’s achievements celebrated and supported by fellow students, staff, and family members.

This is what makes Rossall such an amazing community.

year 7 & 9 scholarship tea

On Tuesday, Rossall School proudly hosted the Year 7 and Year 9 Scholarship Tea in Big School, welcoming both internal and external students who have earned scholarships. This special event was a celebration of academic excellence, creative arts and sporting talents.

Students were presented with their scholarship certificates and badges in front of their families, teachers, and peers.

We were also delighted to hear from current scholarship students, who shared their knowledge, experiences, and words of wisdom with our new scholars. Their insights offered valuable inspiration and encouragement for those just beginning their scholarship journey.

It was fantastic to welcome so many families back to Rossall for such an enjoyable evening.

24 Hour Sport Event for Ghana 2025 Trip

In June, 10 year 12 students and 2 staff are travelling to the Volta region in Ghana to work at Little Roses school, a facility in desperate need of funding and resources.

We are out there for 10 days, this will involve teaching lessons, coaching sport and helping out with improving some of their classrooms.

Due to several episodes of poor weather, a number of classroom ceilings have collapsed meaning that the teaching space they have available to use is limited. They are short of desks, whiteboards, books etc.

To raise money for the school, and for the individual trip costs, Team Ghana completed a 24 Hour sporting event - competing in 24 different sports between the hours of 8am 11th June - 8am 12th June.

So far £925.00 has been raised! If you would still like to make a donation, please donate HERE.

Thank you for your support!

edufuturists awards 2025

We are thrilled to share that Rossall School has been shortlisted for Independent School of the Year at the Edufuturists Awards 2025.

This prestigious award recognises independent schools that are leading the way with a cutting-edge curriculum and a firm commitment to preparing students for success in a rapidly changing world. We wholeheartedly believe that this reflects our ethos and the work we do every day and now, we would love your support to help us win.

Winners will be selected through a combination of public votes and expert judging. Voting is open until 8th May with the winner announced on on 26th June. We warmly invite our community and friends to cast a vote for Rossall here.

This exciting nomination follows the recent announcement of our AI in Primary Education Conference, taking place on 6th June. This groundbreaking event will bring together educators from both the state and independent sectors to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping teaching and learning. Designed to foster collaboration and innovation across sectors, the conference aims to ensure all children benefit - regardless of background or context. Learn more and book places here.

At Rossall, we are proud to be at the forefront of educational innovation - creating a dynamic, inclusive, and future-focused learning environment that empowers both students and staff to thrive in an ever-evolving world.

The University Guys

On Thursday we were fortunate to host The University Guys for a university fair with representatives from exclusively non-UK universities, such as McGill University in Canada, and CUNEF Universidad in Madrid. Students in Year 12 expanded their horizons, gained a vital insight into studying outside of the UK, and considered how studying abroad may enhance their employability prospects and shape them into confident, open-minded global citizens.

THE ROSSALLIAN

We are delighted to announce the new edition of The Rossallian.

Once again, The Rossallian will be available in both print and digital formats, reaching alumni, parents, staff, and friends of Rossall, as well as prospective families at open days and visits.

To support this initiative at no cost to the school, we are once again partnered with Timesed Ltd to invite a selection of high-quality local and regional businesses to advertise in our newspaper. We are grateful to those who have already participated and helped to make this publication possible.

As valued members of our school community, we want to ensure you have the first opportunity to take part. If you would like to learn more about advertising options within The Rossallian, please contact Carl Huyton directly at carl.huyton@times-ed.co.uk. Carl will also be reaching out to other local businesses in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support in making The Rossallian a valuable and engaging publication for the Rossall community.

WAYS TO BE WELL AT ROSSALL

WEEKLY WELLBEING

As summer and warmer weather approaches, water safety is a pertinent issue. Pupils this week have had the opportunity to hear from Lancashire Fire and Rescue about how to stay safe when swimming outside. They have learned not only about the dangers, but also how to help others without putting themselves at risk. A great tip that our visiting speakers shared was to download the app ‘what3words’ which can help rescue teams locate someone anywhere in the world to within 3 square metres. You can read more about how the app is used in emergency situations here

This week’s parent guide is all about generative AI. With 3 out of 4 pupils now using the tool, it is important for parents and educators to understand its uses, but also the risks - the guide below provides a good overview as a starting point.
