Welcome to Rose house

“As the Houseparent of Rose House, I want each of our girls to feel that they are part of a family here at Rossall. Rose has an atmosphere of kindness and warmth which supports everything we do. If there are challenges to face, or joys to share we do it together.”

INFORMATION HUB

We are thrilled to be welcoming you to Rossall School. Whether you are a day student or a boarding student, you will be a member of Rose House and part of the Rose community. The video above has been recorded by some of our current Rose students along with their houseparent and they are looking forward to your arrival. You will no doubt have a number of questions so we have created the information hub below which covers the most common questions. If you have any further questions, we have also listed key contacts who can help, no matter how big or small the question, we will be happy to guide you through the process.

STUDY (for day and boarding students)

  • On your first day of school, you will be given your timetable. A member of the Academic team will talk through how your timetable works and what your school day will look like. If you have had to arrive at School without confirming your subject options, your Houseparent or Tutor will be able to help you organise a meeting to decide.

  • Any required books are provided at School and you do not need to bring any with you. Each subject department is different and some books may require a small fee to be added to your bill, but you will not have to purchase books from an external bookseller.

  • You should have a basic set of stationery and a notebook. Pupils in Year 7 and 8 will be provided with a diary, Year 7 will be provided

with Maths equipment. Those in KS3 (Year 7-9) are provided iPads. Those in Year 10 and upwards should bring their own device.

RosShop sells a wide variety of stationery that covers all Rossall student needs including, but not limited to: Lever arch folders,

notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, rulers, maths sets, and exam board-approved calculators for GCSE, A Level and IB.

  • Inductions programmes are set up for pupils arriving at different times throughout the school year, in September this will be Friday 2nd September. They are tailored to the pupil and will normally include a tour of the campus, IT support and induction, and meeting tutors and teachers. You will ‘buddy up’ with someone in your tutor group or House on a similar timetable, they’ll likely be your first friend at Rossall.

Induction doesn’t end after one day. Heads of Year, Tutors and Houseparents will regularly check in to make sure you are settling into Rossall life well. All staff are always happy to help if you need it, and you do not have to wait to be asked if you’re setting in, you can talk to anyone at any time.

CO-CURRICULAR / ACTIVITIES (for day and boarding students)

  • Activities change every term. There will be a really large selection of options, meaning there is something for everyone. A copy of the choices is sent to parents every term with the option to sign up straight away. At the start of term, one tutor session is dedicated to choosing activities to make sure everyone has signed up or can ask any questions if they’re unsure.

If you’re in Year 9 you will be required to take part in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) once a week on a Thursday. Eventually, you will join either the Army, Navy or RAF sections - each giving you different opportunities to learn and explore.

  • Before you arrive at Rossall you can fill in the application form for any of our programmes and the Director of that programme will contact you to find out more.

Most areas take pupils at all stages of learning, while there will be assessments or auditions for some, this is to place you in the right level of the programme rather than to determine whether you can join.

for BOARDING students

  • A duvet and pillow are provided for all boarding pupils, these include covers, but you are welcome to bring your own covers or additional items of bedding in ‘Single’ size.

  • Your House Matron works all day on a Monday through Friday and does laundry every day. Pupils do not need to do their own Laundry. It is important to use the Name Label service from SchoolBlazer so your uniform returns to you. Your bed will be changed every Tuesday.

  • EU Roaming allows a lot of European students to continue using their own home mobile numbers, however, Brexit has caused some providers to change their roaming costs in the UK, check the rules from your mobile phone provider to see what they charge and if they have maximum allowances.

It is preferable to arrange a SIM card before travelling, as it will mean you can use your phone immediately on landing in the UK. Your Houseparent is always happy to suggest companies you could use. Current pupils favour GiffGaff and VOXI due to their impressive, low-cost data packages.

  • You should not bring large sums of cash into the country, and we do not accept cash payment for fees. However, you may wish to bring money with you for social activities. You should decide with your parents how much money you can bring to Rossall. Large sums of money should be handed to your Houseparent to be placed in the safe. You can withdraw this money when you need it. You may decide you prefer to have a bank account instead, however.

  • If you choose to have a bank account while at Rossall School your Houseparent will be able to help you organise setting one up. Your money can be stored in a safe by your Houseparent until you have done this. If a lot of new Rossall pupils need bank accounts we may be able to arrange for a bank representative to come to us, otherwise, we can help arrange meetings at local branches or assist with online applications where applicable.

HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking corporations, and one of our closest local branches. It may be possible for you to set up an HSBC account at home that allows you to spend in the UK before moving to Rossall.

  • Rossall provides boarders with all their meals and there are small kitchen areas in the Boarding Houses, well-stocked with items such as tea bags, bread, jam etc. We encourage healthy eating at Rossall but students can buy food items - some of our older students even enjoy cooking in the House for their fellow boarders.

Boarders in Anchor will be able to talk to their Houseparents about getting shopping and snacks. Anchor often take group trips to local supermarkets.

Senior boarders are able to go to Fleetwood or Cleveleys on weekend afternoons with permission from their Houseparent.

  • All deliveries to the School will be accepted at the Sport Centre, these are then delivered to your Boarding House. You should address your parcels as follows: Full Name, Boarding House, Rossall School, Fleetwood, Lancashire, FY7 8JW.

  • All of the Houses have luggage storage areas so you won’t have to keep your suitcase in your bedroom.

Over the summer we use many of the Boarding Houses for our Summer School programmes. However, following a discussion with your Houseparent, you may be able to pack your belongings into storage boxes that will be safely stored until you return.

  • Rossall asks all boarding students to look after their room and keep it tidy as you will use your space to do home study as well as sleep and socialise.

Our Boarding Houses are your homes at Rossall, and we all work together to keep them nice environments for each other. Your Houseparent will regularly check your room and, if necessary, ask you to tidy up.

  • Medical insurance is not compulsory for overseas students, as access to the NHS (National Health Service) is included with the Immigration Health Surcharge for students with visas. For short-term students without visas, access to the NHS is available although there may be a charge for its use if joining from a country that does not have a reciprocal health agreement (i.e EHIC). Therefore, short-term students are advised to ensure they complete EHIC registration before they depart and bring their EHIC card with them.

Some families may prefer to opt for additional insurance during their child’s time at Rossall. This is personal choice and is not included in the school fees. The cost is £158 per term (including Insurance Premium Tax). To request more details and the insurance schedule, please contact billing@rossall.org.uk.

Key contacts (for day and boarding students)

specific information for boarding parents

  • All boarding students must appoint an AEGIS Gold or BSA accredited guardian as a condition of entry. Our Guardianship Guidelines document explains Rossall’s policy on educational guardians and can be viewed here.

  • Holiday and travel arrangements must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the end of each term and half term. Regardless of if you are staying in the UK with your Guardian or returning home, holiday and travel details should be submitted by completing our dedicated online form:

    Holiday and Travel Arrangements Form

For students flying from and to the UK we can provide a shuttle service to and from Manchester and Liverpool Airports. For the safety and well-being of our students and in order to adhere to driver regulated hours, the airport shuttle service for arrivals will operate between the hours of 6.00am and 9.00pm, and for flights departing from Manchester/Liverpool between 9.00am and 11.00pm.

For departures students will leave the school campus a minimum of 4 hours prior to their flight time to take into consideration traffic delays or check-in delays. Therefore please consider this when booking your child’s flights. Please be aware that the majority of our students fly into Manchester airport and therefore shuttle services are provided every 2-3 hours on the main arrival day. This may mean a short, supervised wait, depending on arrival times.

We offer transport to Blackpool North train station. Travel by rail is only permitted for students who are 16 years and over.

Once you have submitted the details, you will receive an automated email that confirms the details.

All communication regarding holiday travel arrangements such as changes, delays, updates should be sent to holidayarrangements@rossall.org.uk.

If your child is travelling as an Unaccompanied Minor, please contact Mrs Melanie Schwab who will advise the school representatives details for the airline documentation. If you prefer to speak on the phone, Mrs Schwab can be reached at +44 (0)1253 774254

All boarders arriving at Manchester Airport should make their way to the Information desk in the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1 where Rossall staff will be located.

The staff can be contacted on +44 (0)7807765280 if any difficulties are experienced at the airport.

  • ‘Exeats’ are approved times for full boarders to be away from the School site overnight during the week (eg for a University interview) or on a weekend during the school term dates (eg to stay at a day students house, visit their guardians or to stay with visiting family).

    1. Boarders should discuss the exeat request and the arrangements for such with their Houseparents in the first instance.

    2. If appropriate arrangements are in place Houseparents will request that the Exeat Request Jotform is completed by parents or guardians. If the boarder is staying with someone other than their parent or guardian then the exeat form must be completed by the host adult as well.

    3. Final approval will be given by the Head of Boarding in consultation with House staff.

    4. Exeat weekends are limited to 1 weekend per half term, however exceptional circumstances should be discussed with Houseparents.

    Exeat Procedures

    • Boarders must return by 7.00pm on Sunday or, by special arrangement with the House Staff, by 8.00am on Monday.

    • Exeat arrangements must be confirmed by 10.00pm on the Monday prior to the requested exeat weekend.

    • Boarding house staff take their duty of care very seriously. They retain the highest expectations of the hosts who kindly offer to take in boarders at the weekends and who should provide suitable arrangements for travel, food, sleeping and activities. We strongly recommend that hosts return boarders directly to school, other arrangements do not ensure continuity of care.

    • House Staff are not in loco parentis of students during the travel time to the host family.

    • If exeat arrangements change, House Staff should be informed immediately. We do not allow boarders to take weekends away in hotels or bed and breakfasts without the presence of an appropriate, responsible adult.

    • Boarders should ensure they have contact details for their House Staff whilst on exeat.

    • Public transport can be restricted on a Sunday. Boarders and their hosts should check that trains or buses are running and adequate time should be left for a comfortable return to school.

  • We are fortunate to be located between two vibrant local towns - Fleetwood and Cleveleys - both of which offer a variety of supermarkets, cafés, and independent shops for our boarders to enjoy, and can be accessed on foot or by tram.

Senior boarders (Years 10 - 13) are granted “town leave” on Saturday afternoons from 12:30pm to 5:15pm, and on Sunday afternoons from 12:00pm to 5:15pm, allowing them to visit either Fleetwood or Cleveleys. In the interest of safeguarding, boarders must adhere to the following requirements before leaving campus:

    • Inform a member of the House staff of their intended destination and estimated time of return.

    • Demonstrate that their mobile phone is fully charged and that location sharing is enabled via the Life360 app.

    • Confirm the name(s) of the companion(s) accompanying them - town leave is only permitted in pairs or groups.

    • Sign out and sign back in using the House log.

Year 9 boarders are also permitted town leave but must do so in groups of no fewer than three.

In addition to weekend town leave, Year 13 boarders are allowed off-campus time on Fridays after school, from 4:30pm to 6:15pm. They may also request special permission to visit Blackpool town.

Junior boarders (Years 5 - 8) will have access to the local towns via supervised trips with their House staff at weekends.

  • Boarders in Years 5 to 9 are not permitted to use their mobile phones during the school day. They are provided with designated times in the evenings and at weekends to access electronic devices, during which they may communicate with their parents. Outside these allocated periods, parents may contact their children via the Houseparent.

Boarders in Year 10 are also restricted from using mobile phones during the school day. However, they have unrestricted access to their devices after 5:30pm on weekdays and throughout the weekend.

Boarders in Years 11 to 13 are granted full access to their mobile phones, though they are expected to refrain from using them visibly around the school campus during the day.

For boarders in Years 10 to 13, electronic devices are not collected overnight. This policy is built on trust and education, with the expectation that students will use their devices responsibly. Should a boarder exhibit poor sleep habits, declining academic performance, or inappropriate use of technology, overnight collection of devices may be enforced at the discretion of the Houseparents and may also be requested by parents.

To encourage social interaction and maintain a respectful dining environment, the use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited in the dining hall during meal times.

  • On the campus we have a shop and a cafe. Students are able to purchase smaller items such as snacks, drinks, essential items and stationery. For larger items such as clothing and sports equipment, students in years 10 -  13 are permitted to add it to the school bill unless parents request otherwise. Students in years 7 - 9 are not permitted to add it to the school bill unless parents give consent via email. Communications regarding this should be sent to rosshop@rossall.org.uk

  • All medical details are submitted prior to arrival and update requests are sent annually. However if any details change during the course of the academic year please email our medical team: medical@rossall.org.uk

  • On arrival, all medications and supplements must be handed to the Houseparents. These will be reviewed by our medical team to ensure they comply with UK regulations.

Due to differences in prescribing laws and medication licensing in the UK, any prescribed medication brought from overseas may need to be withheld.

If necessary, suitable alternatives will be prescribed by Rossall’s School Doctor, in line with UK medical and legal standards.

Please ensure any medication is labelled in English with  your child’s full name and date of birth and directions for use.

To enable any prescribed medications to be administered at Rossall, a prescription and recent clinic letter including diagnosis is required.

  • All parental and guardian contact details are submitted prior to arrival and update requests are sent annually. However if any details change during the course of the academic year please email our data team: data@rossall.org.uk

ICT Information

For KS3 (Years 7 to 9), students will be provided with an iPad, the charge for which will be added to future invoices, please click here for more details.

For KS4 and KS5 (Years 10 to 13), students will need to come to school with their own device/s. Laptops are recommended. Many boarding students choose to bring both a laptop and iPad or tablet.

“I’m very proud of my girls and love that we have so many different characters with a huge variety of interests that all combine to be a friendly, caring community.”
