Summer School

Rossall offers a fantastic Summer School programme open to pupils aged 11 – 17 from around the globe and is set on our stunning coastal campus. Pupils can choose to stay for two weeks or several.

Rossall Summer School is an intensive language programme that has been combined with an exciting range of activities, specialised skills masterclasses and plenty of opportunities for memorable cultural experiences.

Careful consideration is given to ensure that all communication during the students’ time here at Rossall Summer School is in English. With this in mind, we try our best, where possible, to recruit a good balance of nationalities to our Summer School.

Senior Programme

Our international students will also have the opportunity to mix with English students at meal times and during afternoon and evening activities on the weeks when our UK residential and non-residential courses are running.

We offer students the opportunity to choose from fourteen different specialised skills weeks (two per week, alongside English tuition). Those who decide not to choose a specialised skill can enjoy a fun packed programme of creative activities and sports.

Rossall Summer School utilises the school’s extensive facilities, allowing us to offer a varied programme to suit everyone.

Programme Details

AGE

The Senior Programme is open to children aged 11-17.

DURATION

There is no limit to the length of time students can stay. However, we do insist on a minimum stay of two weeks.

We also recommend that any current or prospective students wishing to join us at Rossall School in September, should enrol on the last two weeks of the summer programme. This will help the student with their English Language skills in preparation for the start of term. It will also help them get to know the campus and facilities, and ensure a smooth transition into the main school system.

CLASSES SIZES

Summer School classes have a maximum class size of 12.

This means our class sizes will never exceed 12 students per class with the exception of our student-centred project lessons, where the emphasis is on group work with the opportunity to present their project work to all of the students at the end of the week.

CLASS ALLOCATION

On arrival, students will sit a short English test to determine their ability level.

Students will then be allocated to a class according to age and language ability.

ENGLISH

Each student will receive 20 hours of English as an Additional Language tuition per week from fully qualified (EAL) teachers.

By the end of their stay at Rossall Summer School the students will have:

  • Strengthened their grammar
  • Developed confidence and accuracy in speaking
  • Improved their writing skills
  • Improved their reading ability
  • Increased their listening skills

Students who stay with us for three or more weeks will receive an English language certificate.

TENNIS

Our dynamic and enthusiastic coaches are experienced in instructing players with different language capabilities.

During the ten hours of specialised tennis coaching, the coaches will work on every aspect of the game using demonstration, practice and feedback to get the best out of players in every session.

Sessions focus on skills such as spin, shot selection, power and agility – challenging players at every level.

Supporting the on-court training, is a series of workshops designed to develop players’ psychology and all-round athleticism, utilising our outstanding facilities.

FINE ARTS: PAINTING AND DRAWING

The fine arts programme is the perfect week for students who enjoy nothing better than a few hours with a paint brush or pencil and a blank canvas.

Painting and drawing form the foundations of many different styles of art. This week will focus on developing new, or building on existing, brush work and drawing skills.

Students will be given the opportunity to expand their knowledge with activities of different difficulty levels, to learn and practice all types of techniques to progress as an artist and enjoy a basic exploration of the history of art.

The week will conclude in an ‘outdoor classroom’ as the class takes a trip to a local landmark to paint or draw and create a lasting memory of your art week at Rossall.

Week 2 13th July to 20th July

HORSE RIDING

The equestrian programme combines qualified staff, experienced horses and excellent facilities to create an atmosphere in which students can advance their horse riding skills, expand their horsemanship knowledge and enjoy riding with friends.

Our partner equestrian centre provides instructors that are experienced in teaching a variety of abilities. Beginners will enjoy playing mounted games and learn about the horse, while more advanced riders may learn to trot, canter and even jump.

We would be grateful to know the height and weight of the student booking onto this course, as well as level of ability.

Suitable for a baker hoping to make their first ever Victoria Sponge, or for a budding pastry chef with dreams of patisserie kitchens; our experienced tutors will be on hand to nurture all levels of kitchen skills.

Students are promised a most memorable week and will leave us filled with the confidence that they can bake well and replicate, at home, the recipes that they have learnt during Summer School.

They will learn how to identify the most important constellations, know how and when to track down the planets and the best ways to view them from planet earth.

This course will complement the students’ English skills wonderfully, in an academic, yet fun environment.

Week 4 27th July to 3rd August

Golf

Hosted in Rossall School’s very own Golf Academy, Rossall Summer School’s Golf week offers students of all abilities the chance to try, learn and play golf whatever the weather.

Our Academy facilities include studios with GC3 Launch Monitors, swing room with 2 hitting bays and GC2 monitors, a putting lab wit SAM Puttlab, video analysis, 50m2 indoor short game area and a grass range.

We have also established links with a number of local golf clubs & facilities within the local area, widely recognised as the Golfing Capital of England.

PGA Golf Coaches will offer a fun based training programme that will enable students of differing experience/ability the chance to develop the required skills to play and improve.

Advanced English Language

In addition to the twenty hours of English language offered on the standard courses, we are offering students the opportunity to take their English Language skills to the next level with the Advanced English Language course.

Students will learn the basic structure and style of an academic essay, how to read English texts more critically, how to use these ideas in their written and oral arguments, what to listen out for in lectures and documentaries, and how to take useful notes.

Students will gain confidence in group discussion work and how to give a formal presentation.

Alongside these aims, the students will focus on improving their grammatical accuracy in speaking and writing, and extending both their general and academic English vocabulary.

For pupils with English Level B1 or higher.

Week 5 3rd August to 10th August

Football

Daily elite football training sessions will provide creative, technically gifted players individual coaching that focuses on: ball mastery, 1v1 attack, passing and receiving, finishing practices.

The sessions will be led by FA coaches with a wealth of experience in academy football.

MODERN MUSIC ACADEMY

Rossall’s Modern Music Academy week immerses students in music making as a solo artist and as part of a band. Form your own pop/rock band with fellow students to learn how musicians come together to perform in time and harmony.

You will journey through a musical timeline, experiencing and playing music from 1950 through to the present day.

Put together what you’ve learned to end the week with your very own showcase performance in our Performing Arts Studio, complete with gig sound and lighting!

When booking this specialised week, please let us know the key instrument(s) played and level of ability.

Week 6 10th August to 17th August

Golf

Hosted in Rossall School’s very own Golf Academy, Rossall Summer School’s Golf week offers students of all abilities the chance to try, learn and play golf whatever the weather.

Design and Technology

This week will allow your child to develop their skills within this increasingly important area in a world where driverless cars and AI are becoming more than just figments of film and imagination.

The broad learning intentions include developing a perspective on technology such that pupils develop a view of technology and how it might be used, and then enabling technological capability so that pupils experience what it means to ‘do’ technology as opposed to just learning about technology.

You will spend the week working on different designs to create a bespoke product over the ten-hour course learning the different stages of the design journey each day.

Rossall’s very own DT teacher will be supporting our pupils during this course in our state of the art DT department complete with 3D CAD modelling, 3D Printer and laser cutting machines.
